Improvisation has been an integral part of music performance for centuries with Bach, Mozart, Beethoven and other classical composers and musicians being masters of improvising. It is one of the first musical skills we learn as a child yet once we start to learn to play an instrument, most musicians ‘forget’ how to improvise. This improvisation workshop aims to reacquaint musicians with this skill through understanding the various techniques and tools used to spontaneously create music.

Topics covered include:

Chords and arpeggios

Scales and modes

Chord/scale relationship

Common harmonic progressions

Open solos

Pentatonic substitution

Chromaticism

Playing outside

Harmonic superimposition

Rhythmic phrasing

Creating tension and release

Soundscaping
